How does bail work?
After an arrest, the court sets an amount that has to be guaranteed before the person can go home while their case continues. You can pay the whole amount to the court yourself and get it back at the end, or you can go through a bond service. Going through a service costs less up front, because you pay a percentage rather than the whole amount, but that percentage is a fee and it does not come back.
That is the whole trade-off: less money up front, but you do not get it back.
How much can a bail bond cost?
Many states set a legal maximum on what a bail agent may charge as a percentage of the bond. Nevada and California both do. That means the price is not really negotiable at the top end, and a company promising a rate far below everyone else is usually recovering it in other fees. Ask what the total is, in writing, including every fee.

Two things worth knowing before you pay anyone
First, bail can change. It can be reduced at a hearing, and charges can be amended, which sometimes changes the number entirely. It is often worth waiting a day and talking to a lawyer before committing money.
Second, whoever signs for the bond is on the hook if the person does not appear in court. That is a real obligation, not a formality. We will explain exactly what you are agreeing to before you agree to it, and if we think you should not sign, we will say so.
